PURPOSE OF JOB To provide technical specifications, solutions and support, handle technical enquiries and draft quotations, undertake site visits to customers, developing engineering strategy,quality and training, plus offering technical managerial guidance.
JOB LOCATION Local Branch, customer sites and/or other group locations as and where necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROUTINE DUTIES: a) The specification of both equipment and/or complete systems suitable for the duty requirements defined in conjunction with the customer. b) To fault find, recommend, specify and oversee alterations to customer systems and/or equipment. c) To undertake feasibility studies. d) To be responsible for maximising the business opportunities availbe to the company in nominated Key Account customers. e) To issue full technical reports, drawings and specifications to customers and/or other relevant members of staff. f) To undertake, specify and oversee the implementation of customer planned maintenance requirements. g) To achieve competence in, and be able to conduct full surveys under the auspices of, any statutory regulations concerning the fluid power and engineering sectors, including the generation and maintenance of satisfactory records. h) To ensure that work is undertaken quickly, accurately and efficiently, completed within reasonable time scales, producing a quality product at a price consistent with senior management profit policy. i) To ensure work is carried out in accordance with the procedures and practices stipulated in the company quality manual, and in accordance with statutory safe practice and procedures. j) To undergo general and specific vocational training in house, at the premises of nominated suppliers and at nominated educational institutions in addition to on the job guidance. k) Responsible of the safe driving and safe use of company vehicles, ensuring that faults, loss, damage, theft and/or any pertinent matter is reported immediately. l) To participate in the development of the training requirements for the engineering division personnel to ensure that the engineering objectives can be achieved. m) To participate in the development and management of the groups engineering strategy commensurate with the demands of the market. n) To assist in the development and implementation of technical reporting systems between workshop, office and customers to establish a “closed loop feedback” between all parties. o) To participate in the development, installation and management of a recognised quality system accreditation based on ISO 9001-2000. p) To participate in the development of the groups technical directory and technical libraries.
NON ROUTINE DUTIES: a) To carry out other duties and special projects as may from time to time be required by the senior management, and drawing on the special skills and abilities necessary to perform the Design Engineers role.
AUTHORITY AND DISCRETION: a) Not to commit the company to a financial loss, or to commit resources in terms of product and/or manpower to any enterprise which is not to the companys commercial benefit. b) To identify anything necessary for the effective operation of the design engineer role. c) To report on developments of commercial interest at suppliers, competition or customers, imparting such information to all members of management. d) To liaise closely at all times with senior group managers for the purposes of jointly developing upon the role of Design Engineer.

b) To provide regular reports and liaison with immediate superior on all aspects of routine and non routine duties.
TARGETS: a) To maximise the potential of all sales opportunities ensuring that price, quality, GP and productivity remain consistent with company policies. b) To work towards a Total Quality Management (TQM) system. c) To assist in the formulation of engineering objectives, individual personnel training plans and company technical development.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: The company has a policy of general and specific vocational training via internal and external training provision.You are expected to participate in this training either on specified courses or through courses identified by yourself for inclusion in your individual employee training plan. Additionally there will be an induction assessment on commencement of employment followed by an annual appraisal with your immediate superior.
CONDITIONS: a) This position requires the achievement of a minimum Higher National Certificate in engineering [or similar], with a recognised engineering training through both practical and managerial responsibilities. b) A working understanding of the role of sales and quality in a commercial environment. c) A current clean driving licence is required.
