Pre-sales Technical Consultant
Description of Role and Responsibilities: -- Support the sales team -- Accompany sales consultants on meetings with corporate clients, in a wide geographical area, to provide technical support on network solution sales. 25% of time is spent out of the office. There are usually 1-2 meetings a week. -- Consult on non-standard solutions using a range of network devices and services from suppliers as well as using in-house capability. -- Write detailed and accurate proposal documentation including pricing, network diagrams and technical and business justification to support the sale. -- Respond to RFIs and RFPs from time to time. -- Present solutions to clients to board level and assist in closing business. -- Provide regular useful training sessions to the sales teams, and other teams as may require it. -- Keep accurate records -- Keep an accurate record of meetings and discussions held with clients -- Provide other business teams with detailed information about solutions sold -- Provide management with regular performance statistics against agreed targets -- Develop your own technical and sales skills -- Attend regular training on products and technologies and gain useful accreditation for the business as agreed in a personal development plan. -- Attend conferences and seminars from time to time, gather information on potential suppliers and evaluate product fit for the portfolio. -- Improve your personal performance year on year. Qualifications Required: Pre-sales consultants require an HND or higher qualification in a technical, scientific or computing subject. A BSc or better in a computing or related course is preferred. Vendor accreditations from key suppliers like Cisco, particularly sales certifications, are considered a bonus rather than a requirement. In particular candidates with a CCIE certification are not usually suitable. Core Competencies and Experience Required: The role requires a blend of interpersonal, commercial and technical skills. Previous experience managing a team would be an advantage. We expect a minimum of two years relevant pre-sales/technical experience to enter at consultant level. Candidates wishing to move into pre-sales from another job role would need to demonstrate four years relevant sales/marketing/customer support/engineering experience in addition to a suitable personality and skills as below. The job role suits an analytical, detail-orientated approach, with a support mentality and good numeracy skills combined with a flair for presentation and business sales. Good candidates tend to have strong written and oral communication skills, usually with experience in B2B consultative sales. Pre-sales employees need a wide, but not necessarily deep understanding of technology, particularly data networks. Key solution areas include Internet access, site-to-site connections including WAN, MPLS and IPSec solutions, voice convergence, network security, hosting and co-location services, LAN and WLAN systems. All technology skills must be tempered with and informed by a deep understanding of how these technologies are commonly used and assist SMEs in doing business. This role would suit presentable and friendly problem-solvers with a real talent in business communication. It demands energy and commitment and does involve some travel. Candidates who are flexible, imaginative and who get a buzz from solving business problems by providing top quality technical solutions will do well. Candidates will need to have a nose for when proposed solutions ?feel wrong? and need to come across as a calm and confident technical authority, sometimes in stressful sales situations at board level in small and medium companies. The ability to set realistic client expectations and structure technically accurate network solutions should be complemented with a confidence to admit their own technical design limitations and a capability to know when and where to seek assistance if required.
